Richard Wilson Guitars Custom Shop
Create the guitar of your dreams
Each year Richard Wilson builds a select number of custom instruments.
For these instruments, he works directly with individual players and collectors to craft the instrument of their dreams.
Customisations range from minor tonewood, hardware or trim substitutions through the completely new shapes and styles of instruments.
Current wait time for a custom instrument is 12-18 months. Currently a small number of slots are available on the build calendar for completion in late-2025.
Personal Touches
Custom inlays and engravings.
Inlays as simple as your initials or a unique symbol or marker through to intricate or ornate images made from pearl, stone, wood or composite materials.
In some instances we can even add a unique inlay or engraving to guitars we currently have in stock. Contact us for more information.
Substitutions & Variations
Customise our core range of guitars.
With our core range of guitars as the starting point, we can vary just about every detail.
Tuning Machines
The finest modern sealed tuners such as the Gotoh 510 range, impeccably crafted vintage reproductions from Waverley, plus countless other options from the world's leading guitar hardware manufacturers.
Bindings, Rosette & Trim
At any given time we have more than 70 binding and trim combinations to choose from, from solid wood, plastic and celluloid through to ornate rope marquetry. Purflings as simple as solid lines through to herringbone, coral snake and many others.
Tonewoods
Sustainably and ethically sourced.
We have access to an ever-growing range of both old and new world tonewoods thanks to partnerships with some of the world's finest tonewood dealers.
Hawaiian Koa, Tasmanian Blackwood, Sitka Spruce, Mahogany, Indian Rosewood, Maple, Western Red Cedar, Bubinga, Ziricote, Pau Ferro, Cocobolo, Walnut and Brazilian Rosewood are just some of the species we have available.
We also stock Australian species such as Queensland Maple, Bunya Pine, Silver Quandong, Maple Silkwood, Silky Oak, Gidgee and many more.
Master Grade & Reserve Grade
We keep a small inventory of Master Grade and Reserve grade tonewoods. These are tonewoods so unique in their visual and tonal characteristics that they are reserved for only our finest instruments.
