Construction & Setup
The fundamental construction of our four Weissenborn styles does not differ between the Style 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Every guitar is painstakingly voiced to bring out the best possible tonal characteristics, and crafted to ensure many decades of faithful service with very little ongoing maintenance.
Koa (Acacia koa) and Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) are two very closely related species of Pacific hardwoods which offer very similar tonal characteristics and are hands down the most ideal tonewoods for Weissenborn guitars.
Both woods make for an incredible Weissenborn guitar both in richness of tone, warmth, sustain, while also being visually stunning.
Figuring, flame, curl, fiddleback are terms for a natural feature that occurs in some species of wood.
It gives the wood a stunning, iridescent glow which sees the grain shimmer and change colour from different angles.
Only a tiny fraction of Tasmanian Blackwood and Hawaiian Koa features figuring, and we reserve it for select instruments.
From the selection of the raw tonewoods through to final setup, Richard Wilson individually crafts, voices and finishes each instrument. A small team of luthiers and woodworkers who assist with preparing tonewoods, cutting and shaping some of the individual components, sanding and keeping the workshop tidy and organised.
Every guitar is crafted from scratch in our boutique workshop in Brisbane, Australia.
